Where to apply according to the type of visa.

1. BLS

From October 1, 2026, all the visa applications (except the visa applications admitted directly at the Consular Section, see below) from our consular jurisdiction (Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina) must be submitted by appointment only to the BLS Spain Visa Application Center in Washington DC.

Please note that there are different sections for Short-term (Schengen) visas, for Long-Term (National) visas, and for Study visas appointments.

Please be sure that you have all the required documentation before booking an appointment, as only complete applications with all the complete and correct documentation will be admitted and processed.

2. CONSULAR SECTION

From October 1, 2026, only applications for the following types of visas (not listed above in the previous point) must be submitted to the Consular Section of the Embassy.

-DIPLOMATIC & OFFICIAL VISAS:

Please submit applications for accreditation, official or courtesy visas (only for diplomatic or official passports) to the Consular Section of the Embassy of Spain:

Please note that, in order to expedite the process, Schengen Courtesy visa applications can be submitted to BLS as well.

-OTHER WORK & RESIDENCE VISAS:

Once the applicant has the required documentation, the applicant must scan and email all the required documentation to cog.washington.vis@maec.es. If there is not enough space to include all the attached documents, it is possible to send it in different, numbered emails. Please do not send emails if you do not have all the required documents yet. When we receive all the required documents, we will answer by e-mail and schedule an appointment to come in person to the Consular Section of the Embassy to submit the application.
Please write the email subject as follows: “APPOINTMENT REQUEST. Visa Type. Given Name FAMILY NAME. Email Number”
