Place of submission: From October 1, 2026, all the study visa applications from our jurisdiction (including from students from our jurisdiction with a Fulbright grant), must be submitted in person by appointment only to the BLS Spain Visa Application Center for Spain in Washington DC.

Please note that there are different sections for Short-term (Schengen) visas and for Long-term (National) visa appointments.
Please be sure that you have already all the requiered documents before scheduling an appointment, as only complete applications with all the requirements will be admitted and processed.
Applications accepted at the BLS Spain Visa Application Center will be submitted on the next working day to the Consular Section.
Doctorate Degree Studies
From August 2026, visa applicants pursuing a doctorate degree in Spain will no longer need to apply for a Study visa and will instead apply for a Researcher visa
(RIN code).
Visa applicants pursuing a doctorate (or PhD) in Spain, in accordance with the Spanish Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (MECES), will no longer be considered students for the purpose of obtaining the corresponding visa, instead doctoral students will be considered researchers and will be subject to Article 72 of Law 14/2013, of September 27, on support for entrepreneurs and their internationalization.
Therefore, Prior to applying for the visa, doctoral students must obtain a national research residence permit, in accordance with Article 72.2.b of the aforementioned Law 14/2013, which is processed by the UGECE (Large Companies and Strategic Groups Unit).
